The name also fits into something of a theme for other professional sports franchises in the city, including the Kansas City Chiefs of the NFL, the former Kansas City Kings of the NBA, and the former Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro National League.
For the Royals, it’s a quick return to the World Series after falling in seven games to the San Francisco Giants last season. Prior to that, the Royals had not appeared in a World Series since 1985. Overall, this will be their fourth World Series appearance, with their lone championship coming in 1985. For the Mets, this will be their fifth World Series appearance and their first since 2000. They have won it twice, in 1969 and 1986.
After earning a wild-card entry to the playoffs in 2014, in 2015 the Royals won the franchise’s first division title since 1985.
The Royals entered the 2015 All-Star break with the best record in the American League (52–34). The team continued its momentum into the second half of the season, and on July 26, Royals management traded three prospects for 2014 All-Star pitcher Johnny Cueto to help bolster its starting pitching rotation, as well as trading for super-utility player Ben Zobrist.[27] The team ended the regular season with a record of 95–67, best in the American League, and the organization’s best since 1980.
The Royals faced the Houston Astros in the ALDS. Down 2–1 in the series and trailing 6–2 in the 8th inning of Game 4, the Royals rallied for 5 runs en route to a 9–6 win before Cueto’s gem in Game 5 powered the Royals to a second consecutive ALDS.[28] The Royals defeated the Toronto Blue Jays in Game 6, to win the 2015 ALCS and earn a trip to face the New York Mets in the 2015 World Series.
